About the League

What is NCAL?

NCAL, or the North Carolina Academic League, is an organization dedicated to boosting the state, quality, and size of Quizbowl within North Carolina at the high school level. Currently based in Chapel Hill, NCAL aims to support teams from the Research Triangle and beyond by hosting regularly scheduled tournaments at a more affordable cost.

We are especially committed to supporting rural, Title 1, and underrepresented schools within North Carolina to play quizbowl and qualify for National level tournaments.

NCAL envisions a future where North Carolina contains both thriving local circuits, alongside a stronger, unified network stretching across the state.

What is Quiz Bowl?

Quiz Bowl is an academic competition comprising a wide variety of topics, ranging from trivia and popular culture to math and physics. The base concept is that two teams of 4 players each compete to answer questions, and whoever is able to score more points is the victor.

To discover more about its formal game mechanics, parameters, and structure, you can learn more here: About Quiz Bowl (NAQT).

Why is Quiz Bowl beneficial?

Quiz Bowl is a widespread activity that has connected people from all over the country over the shared pursuit of knowledge. Quiz Bowl helps students identify concepts of interest in a fun and accessible manner, while also promoting critical thinking under pressure and teamwork. Players need to learn how to communicate ideas with their team to find answers. Quiz Bowl also benefits from an incredibly inclusive and active community, with openly accessible ways to connect with others.

How can my school get involved?

Quiz Bowl takes a handful of motivated and interested students. It's beneficial to have a club where the students can convene and practice for tournaments. We recommend finding a teacher interested to serve as advisor and have students join the club.

How should I study?

There are many beneficial ways to study Quiz Bowl, and choosing the one for you can take time. As a team, its often very important to try to distribute categories across teammates, allowing for different people to focus on different subject areas. For NAQT questions, the subject distribution can be found here, allowing for you to determine levels of priority: NAQT High School Subject Distribution.

There are two "kinds" of Quiz Bowl knowledge, dubbed "real" and "fake." Real knowledge is considered knowledge gained through more organic means, where students study what interests them in traditional manners, such as classroom activities and textbooks. Fake knowledge is considered knowledge gained through specifically studying Quiz Bowl content. People study for fake knowledge through playing a large amount of questions (primarily through qbreader.org), and flashcards (such as the Anki application). Despite its name, fake knowledge is no worse than real knowledge.
